As I needed to get some USD which has to be after a particular year and in some particular deno, I phoned in advance. I called several stores and none of them had USD on hand with those specifications. Finally I phoned Million Dollar Exchange. The person who answered the phone said that he is the lone person there and has to attend to customers at the counter. As such, he can’t stop to check for such specific requirements if it is an enquiry over the phone. He said that he will check for me if I were at the counter. By the time I could reach the mall and his counter, it was about 30 minutes to closing time. It looked like he have had a long day, as he was visibly tired. So, I hoped for the best as I repeated the specifics. He didn’t say much, but he started looking through his stack of USD straightaway and began taking out those notes which are according to the year and deno I needed. As he kept at it, I noticed he was sorting out more than I needed. So I repeated how much it was that I needed. He nodded and continued. When he finished sorting and counting, he told me the amount I had to give in SGD. It was definitely more than what I had said I needed. After some minutes of animated clarification, we both realised that due to the language gap between us and perhaps also differences in colloquial expressions, he thought I needed much more than what I thought I had communicated clearly to him. In the end, as I thanked him for his effort, we could both laugh over the realities of language gaps and differences in colloquial expressions, and the miscommunication that could and had ensued. I appreciate his effort to meet the transaction request even though it was so close to closing time and he was obviously tired. Thanks bro! Will seek out Million Dollar Exchange again!

Met with the owner Salim who has now taken over the money changer’s operations serving customers. He was very friendly and very willing to help me in my predicament. I will recommend him to anyone else. His money changer also has one of the best rates in Singapore as I have compared his rates to many other changers.

The opening hour is at 10am but only starts business at 10.11am. Conveniently located in a mall near the train station but major currency’s rate is not attractive (JPY 109.29). Good if you are in a rush and don’t mind spending a little more to save hassle and for more convenience
