Although a new, very modern pharmacy just opened up nearly next door to where I stay, I still continue to go to Aphinan Pharmacy as I have been doing in the 8 months since arriving in Vientiane, Laos.

The pharmacist/owner is a very kind, knowledgeable, and helpful Laotian woman. In a country with as few medical clinics, hospitals, and other facilities, sometimes I depend on a pharmacist for advice on what to do. Whenever a serious problem is presented, advice given by pharmacists or other people with some knowledge of Laos and/or the field of medicine is the same every time:

“If you can afford it, go to Thailand a.s.a.p. and go to a public or private hospital or clinic.” This is good advice.

Anything short of that, I go to Aphinan Pharmacy, where I always get the medical/pharmaceutical supplies I’m looking for, as well as advice when I need it. I like supporting privately owned small businesses, and therefore I choose to continue to be a loyal customer at Aphinan.

I highly recommend it for all your everyday pharmacy needs such as antibiotics, bandaging supplies, medicine for simple diarrhea, heartburn, fever, headache, as well as vitamins, “medicine to assist with ED”, etc.

Very fair prices and conveniently located in central downtown Vientiane on Rue Setthathilath.

Woman is able to speak english but is really not nice to talk to. She is probably tired of tourists and won’t help you at all, she will just tell you to do your own research on internet. That’s a pitty when I see that average laotian people seem very nice but not able to speak english, this lady is good at english but kind of mean…

The Biggest Pharmacy in Laos

In Vientiane, the capital city of Laos, there are several popular pharmacy alternatives that cater to the health and wellness needs of the local population. Whether you are a resident or a traveler in the city, it is always good to know where you can find reliable and high-quality products for your health concerns.

Here are the top 3 pharmacy alternatives in Vientiane:

1. Traditional Herbal Medicine Shops: Traditional herbal medicine has a long history in Laos and continues to be widely used in the country. Herbal medicine shops can be found throughout Vientiane, offering a range of natural remedies for various ailments. These shops usually stock a variety of herbs, roots, and leaves, as well as herbal teas, powders, and oils. The staff at these shops are knowledgeable about traditional remedies and can provide guidance on their usage and benefits.

  • Advantages:
    • Wide range of natural remedies
    • Knowledgeable staff
    • Products derived from traditional practices
  • Disadvantages:
    • May not have pharmaceutical-grade medications
    • Limited supply of conventional drugs

2. International Pharmacies: Vientiane is home to several international pharmacies that stock a wide range of pharmaceutical products from around the world. These pharmacies are known for their quality products and strict adherence to international standards. They often have a pharmacist on staff who can provide advice and information about medications and their usage. International pharmacies in Vientiane are popular among expatriates and visitors who prefer familiar brands and medications.

  • Advantages:
    • High-quality medications from reputable brands
    • Pharmacists available for consultation
    • Stock a wide range of products
  • Disadvantages:
    • Prices may be higher compared to local pharmacies
    • Limited selection of local and traditional remedies

3. Government-run Health Centers: The Laotian government operates various health centers and clinics in Vientiane that offer a range of healthcare services, including pharmacy services. These health centers usually have a pharmacy on-site where you can purchase prescribed medications. The advantage of visiting a government-run health center is that the prices of medications are often subsidized and more affordable compared to private pharmacies. The staff at these health centers are qualified healthcare professionals who can provide guidance on medication usage.

  • Advantages:
    • Affordable medications
    • Qualified healthcare professionals
    • Availability of prescribed medications
  • Disadvantages:
    • Longer waiting times
    • May have limited stock of certain medications

When choosing a pharmacy alternative in Vientiane, it is important to consider your specific needs and preferences. Whether you opt for traditional herbal remedies, international pharmacies, or government-run health centers, make sure to consult with a healthcare professional for proper guidance and advice on your health concerns.
