Location and Geological Significance
Situated in the southeast of the Altyn-Emel National Park, the Aktau Mountains stand as a testament to the region’s geological heritage. Spanning approximately 30 kilometers from east to west and up to 2 kilometers from north to south, these majestic mountains emerge from the remnants of a dried-up ancient ocean, boasting sedimentary deposits that date back over 400 million years.
The Aktau Mountains, characterized by their striking white-colored rocks, were formed by volcanic activity and the gradual accumulation of sedimentary layers from an ancient lake that once filled the Ili basin. Over time, tectonic and erosional forces sculpted the landscape, giving rise to breathtaking gorges, canyons, and rock formations of various colors, including green, red, blue, and white.
