At check in we had to fill out a document and write down all our passport and visa information but right after that they scanned our passports. Made us wonder why they even made us do that. The free welcome drink is only available before 6pm. We arrived shortly before 6pm and were told that we could bring our bags to our room and then we could still get our free beer. But when we went to the bar, they refused us the drink. However, just getting a waiter to talk to us was difficult. He went past us multiple times even making eye contact but never speaking to us. We had to call him twice until he decided to finally talk to us. At first the dorm looked nice. But then we saw multiple living bugs inside the shower and even one 2 cm bug in the bed that was still alive. Also there’s no elevator, so if you stay in an upper floor, prepare for the stairs. At first glance the hostel seems nice but our experience wasn’t good at all.

MAD Monkey is an incredible place to stay. The hostel’s construction, complete with a delightful swimming pool and a cozy design, sets the perfect atmosphere. The staff is exceptionally friendly and accommodating. During a tour to the killing fields with Kim Sin, his management of the trip was impressive. Upon returning to the hostel, Malis and Tony took excellent care of us, adding to the positive experience. The sunset tour with Tin Tin was not only enjoyable but also led by an outstanding guide—his vibrant personality made it an unforgettable experience. Ending the day with a party at the hostel hosted by Thy Thy was an absolute blast. Overall, the entire staff contributes to creating the best hostel experience, and I am looking forward to returning to MAD Monkeys in Phnom Penh.

We absolutely loved our stay at Mad Monkey. Our room was beautiful and had really good views of the city. The bar, restaurant and pool areas are really nice and clean and has a really nice vibe to it. We stayed for two nights and on our last night we’re taken to a club by the staff and had an amazing time. Mad monkey really lived up to its reputation.

We stayed for 3 nights in a private double. The hostel is really clean and the relax areas are great. Pool was lovely (although not in the sun most of the day). Staff were all friendly. Food was really good. Our room was small (could not get down both sides of the bed) and the bed was hard. Our shower also didn’t drain properly. There’s also no elevator so if you’re on the top floor be ready for some tired legs every time you need to go back to the room. Otherwise we had a nice stay.

A truly great place to stay. Lin and Tony who both work at the front desk are responsible, kind, and can always be relied on. The da suitors are clean, the food is excellent, and Mad Monkey really is a home away from home. I am always happy to come back, and cannot recommend it enough.

It has 2 buildings and I stayed in a building which has pool and bar. The bedroom has 6 beds and it was clean. The bathroom is separate between men and women, it has 2 showers and 2 toilets also it always stays clean. At the lobby they sell various menus. You can meet with people around the world here. Overall it is a great place to stay if you come alone. But you need to deposit 5 dollars to stay.

This is a place I visit 2 – 3 times a year for a few drinks when I visit the capital and as last weekend showed me it never disappoints. The bar had changed location from one floor up to one below and I think it is a lot better. Brilliant views of the river at sunset, pleasant atmosphere, staff are friendly. Well worth checking out even if only for a drink.

The Biggest Hostel in Cambodia

Phnom Penh, the capital city of Cambodia, offers a wide range of accommodation options for budget travelers. In addition to hostels, there are several popular alternatives that provide affordable and unique experiences. Here are three top choices for travelers visiting Phnom Penh:

  • Guesthouses: Guesthouses are small, family-run establishments that offer comfortable and affordable accommodation. They often have a more personal touch compared to hostels and can provide a glimpse into local Cambodian culture. Guesthouses usually offer private rooms with en-suite bathrooms as well as shared facilities such as kitchens and common areas. Prices vary depending on the location and amenities, but they generally offer excellent value for money.
  • Budget Hotels: Budget hotels are another popular alternative to hostels in Phnom Penh. These hotels offer a range of facilities and services at a slightly higher price than guesthouses but are still more affordable than luxury hotels. Budget hotels typically provide a higher level of comfort and convenience, with amenities such as air conditioning, Wi-Fi, and 24-hour reception. Some budget hotels also offer breakfast or have on-site restaurants. Booking in advance can often secure good deals on room rates for budget hotels.
  • Homestays: For travelers seeking a more immersive experience, homestays provide an excellent alternative to hostels. Homestays allow guests to stay with local families and experience everyday life in Phnom Penh. Guests can learn about local customs, traditions, and even participate in activities such as cooking or farming. Homestays typically offer private rooms in the family home, with shared facilities. It’s important to research and choose a reputable homestay to ensure a safe and comfortable experience.

These three alternatives to hostels in Phnom Penh offer budget travelers a variety of options to suit their preferences and needs. Whether it’s the personal touch of a guesthouse, the convenience of a budget hotel, or the immersive experience of a homestay, there is something to cater to every traveler’s taste.
