By 0730am in the early morning, the morning market is bustling heavily with activities. It is far more exciting than the morning markets of Vientiane. If you are a tourist, it is possible to do some negotiation on prices as the locals tend to mark up the products for a huge margin. There was a stall that waited for us to be gone before accepting payment from a local buyer! A mini tourist trap, as one might say! There are also some repetition with the night market in terms of the items sold (e.g. clothes, bags, textiles etc.)

Nevertheless, this market is still one of our favorite as there is a huge range of products being sold. For non-edibles, there are bags, clothes, souvenirs such as magnets or paintings. For edibles, there is a wide variety of food being sold – hot soup with noodles, baked or raw fish, crackers and seaweed, chilli pastes, fruits and smoothies, and even exotic food such as mice or frogs! Some locals do get their daily shopping for vegetables and produce here as well.

Best to go early in the morning when the sun is not blazing hot. Also worth noting that by 1030am, the vendors would be starting to pack up, so better be there early!

The real deal local market, hopefully it will keep it’s character. The variety of vegetables and animals sold here is huge. Unfortunately there start to be tourist focused stalls selling the same things as the evening market and souvenirs. A few years ago it was still possible to buy bbq honeycomb here, now in November 23 the vendor seems to have left, maybe a first sign of the end?

Must see attraction in Luang Prabang. Walk through the stalls, try some dishes and talk with the locals. I could spend here a whole morning. Skip the sad spectacle of the alms ceremony where monks are photographed in close proximity without consent by unrespectful tourists and come directly here.

Love this morning market! There’s a trend in many cities across Southeast Asia to move these types of street markets indoors, hopefully Luang Prabang recognizes how special this market is — it’s a must see when visiting Luang Prabang and I’ve visited several times. There’s lots of things going on here — noodle shops and coffee stands, a couple of fresh market sections (river fish and meat butchers), several places selling clothing, and lots of stalls selling local foods (like dried river weed). It’s a great place to grab some breakfast snacks (sai oua – sausage and grilled stick rice on a stick) and try some local eats. It’s crowded — but in a good way — you’re in a jostling street market where locals come to buy and sell.
