It was overall interesting to visualise Vietnam’s history. Many objects and pictures but I think it may have been lacking in explanations. They did have some explanations in English and French, but it was more of the generic explanations. The more specific ones were usually only in Vietnamese. Still worth a visit if you have time !

One of the best museums in Hanoi with rich displays and well-organized exhibitions following a timeline. First-time visitors should note that the museum have two buildings separated by a small street. The big, main building is about the ancient & dynastic eras, the smaller one across the street is about the modern time starting with the French invasion. Your ticket gives access to both.

I’d suggest the museum add more reading materials & background info about the modern era, especially when there were transitions between forces or between periods during the resistance against the French & the Vietnam war time.

IMPORTANT!!! Google maps will direct you to the building about modern Vietnamese history, but to go in chronological order you need to go across the road to the other building to start with prehistoric Vietnam. I’ve included a photo of the correct building to start at below.

Other than that, the museum is OK. The prehistory room was very good, but once I got to the room about Chinese influence and the development of Vietnam as a country, the descriptions and explanations became very confusing and it was really hard to tell what the items on display showed. I kind of didn’t get the sense of Vietnamese history that I’d hoped for.

Great museum with a ton of historical artefacts about Vietnam’s history. Would have been nice if there was a Museum Shop and translations for the written documents on display. Information appeared a little fragmented and a historical overview tracing the timeline of events would have helped with piecing everything together. Maybe a feature area detailing the pivotal role Uncle Ho had on the nation as well. Otherwise, it was a fantastic experience with lovely staff.

Large museums that details Vietnamese history. Be aware there’s two buildings because I was in the post 1945 building confused where the ancient history sections were. They have all the national treasures kept here. Worth a visit.
