  This is one of Ho Chi Minh City’s many museums.   And it is one of the more historical ones.

  Built in 1890, it was once named named the Gia Long Palace – after the founding emperor of tue Nguyen dysnasty a.ka. Vietnam’s last dynasty.

  This temporarily served as the Presidential Palace back in 1962 after the old Presidential Palace was bombed.   In 1963, it was here where President Diem was before he went to the Cha Tam Church to hide (he was assasinated shortly after).

  The highlight of the building is the beautiful spiral staircase in the middle.  The French style windows are also gorgeous.

  It also houses a lot of artifacts and photo displays that reflect the old Vietnamese way of life.  Among the displays that interested us are the old historical notes and coins.

  Outside the palace are some tanks and aircraft the Americans left during the war.  The spoils of war as some would call it. Their is also a nice old black car at near the gate entrance.

  Therr are not a lot of tourists that comes here.  But the place does have a lot of photo and Instagram opportunities.   During our visit, we saw at least two couples having their pre-nuptial photo shoots.

  PRO TIP:  It’s a must visit in Saigon if you are planning to stay in Saigon for more than 5 days.

  Awesome. If you want to understand about the history of Vietnam, this museum is recommended. In addition to one of tourist attractions in HCMC, we met many people there to prepare their wedding. Nice experience 🙂

  The presence of numerous individuals engaged in wedding photography at the museum significantly affected the overall visitor experience. While weddings are undoubtedly special occasions, their frequent occurrence within the museum premises may disrupt the tranquil atmosphere that visitors typically seek when exploring cultural and historical exhibits.

  Moreover, it was evident that many of the exhibits were in need of maintenance. The lack of proper upkeep was noticeable, and the overall environment appeared somewhat neglected and, regrettably, unclean. This detracted from the museum’s appeal, as it is crucial for such institutions to maintain a pristine and inviting atmosphere for their patrons.

  Additionally, the absence of air conditioning posed a considerable challenge, particularly in hot weather. The discomfort of a warm and stuffy environment can impact one’s ability to fully engage with the exhibits and absorb the historical and cultural knowledge on display. The museum could greatly enhance the visitor experience by addressing these environmental concerns and prioritizing the maintenance of its exhibits to ensure they remain in optimal condition for all who wish to explore its offerings.

  I had a positive experience at the Museum, a walk around the Museum grounds is a journey through time and several historical aircraft and tank plus other armourments make for a great afternoon, make the effort to locate the bunker and tunnels beneath the Museum. Well worth the 35,000 VD gate fee.

  This museum has the collections of war history and Vietnamese culture. The whole building is huge with European style. It’s worth to visit once. However, the collections need to maintain in a better quality and they shouldn’t allow people to have pre-wedding photo activity.

  I grew up watching the Vietnam War on the nightly news. To experience the opposite perspective is both emotional and thought provoking. There are no winners in war and especially the civilians pay the price. The second floor is the most wrenching and the third floor photo exhibition is amazing.

  Had a great day at the war museum learning about the Vietnam war. Despite not having an audio guide with me, I don’t think I needed one in the end as the information provided was very informative. Lots of things to see from the pics provided. I will say it’s not for the faint of heart as some of the stories and pictures are quite gut wrenching but definitely worth hearing about. Tickets were very cheap to enter at only 40,000 dong (about £1.25). 10/10!

  Outside are the things I love, aircraft. Inside are the horrors of a brutal war. If you have children of a sensitive nature avoid the second floor. The photographs and graphic details bring home the brutality dished out to the gentle people of Vietnam who mostly were not involved in the war, just trying to live through it.

  Poignant reminders of the impact of war on a country and its people. Some very moving exhibits. I had forgotten about the horror of agent orange until one of the exhibit rooms gave a stark reminder. Well worth a visit if you are in the area. Independence palace and the central post office are also nearby if you want to combine visits.

  All the history of the Vietnam wars are with detail presented in this museum. Many photos, information, and an audio guide will give you a very good understanding of the cruelty used by American forces against Vietnamese people. Due to the content of many war crime photos, I would not recommend taking very young children to this museum. You can pay for the audio guide at the entrance and get inside the building.
